Gray Matter is at: 926 Baca Street #6 Santa Fe, New Mexico 87505.

An exhibition of artworks that are manually operated, mechanical, or otherwise interactive or address previous "heights of technology” with the benefit of hindsight.

This exhibition, following the blockbuster Currents New Media Festival takes a step backwards.

Artworks displayed range from an interpretation derived from very simple but ancient innovations such as the pencil and weight driven toys to more engineered and complicated wind driven sculptures.

  • Michael Sumner from Burning Books has created a miniature old-time slideshow of self-portraits culled from reflections in photos of televisions offered for free on Craigslist.

  • Damon and Sabrina Griffiths present a hand-cranked mechanical hideous looking cartoon mouse riding a taught-wire unicycle, as well as puppets from their Flying Wall Studio.

  • Gen Hayashida delights us as usual with a cranked machine that when in full operation spell “AXLE”.

  • Kathleen McCloud reflects on early digital tech with a piece about her antique solar powered Texas Instruments calculator.

  • Christopher Murphy’s vehicle-mounted bird will fly from his Volvo wagon (you’ve seen it around Santa Fe) to Axle’s front bumper.

  • Don Redman presents a model and blueprints of his wind-powered Pegasus Wheel designed to sit on pilings in the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Michael Schippling presents GI Joe dolls which swing back and forth in a stattaco rhythm as the battle and embrace.

  • Steve Storz brings crazy grunge machines cobbled together from old VCRs and Telephone parts, that jerk and whirr with protruding biomorphic tentacles.

  • Charlotte Thurman shares her "Home Movie: Halloween Candy Commercial 97'" Rotoscoped graphite animation over degraded VHS home video.

  • Eliza Twichell shows her charming and humorous shrugging clothespin oracle figure.

  • Ven Voisey’s old teddy bear claims the wall and speaks to us from his belly-mounted cassette player.

with The Santa Fe Botanical Garden's

Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve

September 1 – 23 in Axle

All of September and October at the wetlands preserve

Opening for both shows: at the wetlands preserve, Saturday,  Sept.1 , 1- 4 pm

This pair of exhibitions explores the relationship between art and nature, creates awareness of our local natural resources, and promotes wetland and ecological conservation. The artists will create ephemeral sculptural artworks using natural materials in sites in the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve in La Cienega. Works will be on view at the preserve throughout the months of September and October. A companion exhibition of related works by the same artists will open in the Axle Contemporary mobile gallery on September 1 and continue through September 23. This is the third iteration of the Wilderness Acts Biennial, which began in 2014. Works in this exhibition include a small shelter constructed from "invasive" saplings, a day-long performance ritual of seed distribution, and beavers sculpted from mud.

The Santa Fe Botanical Garden's Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve is a 35-acre nature preserve and home to a rare natural cienega (marsh) and hosts a bountiful diversity of plants and wildlife.
