This exhibition explores the realm of the non-rational narrative. These works are not abstract, yet also do not fit in to the confines of an easily understandable narrative. These artists are working on a fragile border between storytelling and poetry, between rational and irrational, between didactic and incomprehensible. This art has a vernacular feel, a visual aid towards a deeper more personal understanding. Any of these artists could be seen as an Outsider, except none are. They are schooled and sophisticated, and navigate the world of contemporary art. Their choices of subject, methods of execution, and the very thoughts and pursuits that drive their artistic production are idiosyncratic. By working in this borderline borderland, the artists spark our imagination and sense of wonder with super-sensible imagery, humor, and ingenious perspectives on our world. This is art for the “folk” in all of us. Each of the artists in this exhibition dares to wear their heart on their sleeve. Their deeply personal responses to universal themes call us to question and explore ourselves to make sense of what we see and who we are.
