June, 2015

Mindy McGovern's Metapatterns is composed of sound, video and painting. It explores emergent behaviors of pattern.

Metapatterns is  a term coined by the late Gregory Bateson and often applied to complexity theory. It is a way of viewing patterns in an abstract way, and seeing how they connect and become functional or meaningful.  It exists across multiple scales and disciplines, such as the honeycomb design and fractals. Inspired by the cymatic patterns formed by sound in liquid, the patterns for McGovern’s installation function as visual designs, rhythms, and harmonies.
