Mural Viviente is a mural image of a Hawk Moth using colorful seeds of edible plants embedded in a layer of natural multicolored clay and soil.  The seeds will sprout and grow over the exhibition period, enhancing the image of the mural with the textures of sprouting plants. This mural adapts the concept of community seed murals in Tepozlan Mexico, called Murales de Semillas (seed murals) created and displayed during celebrations such as Easter and Carnival.  The imagery will be in the spirit of Tepozlan but incorporating designs and elements of the American Southwest.  The focus of the mural is on an important but little known pollinator called the Hawk Moth, which is an important figure in Pueblo culture and often a perceived enemy of non-native gardens.  This Mural looks at the need to encourage pollinator awareness, spread seeds, and increase biodiversity in our local ecosystems and gardens.

Jade Leyva is the creator and coordinator of the Community Seed Mural Project at Seeds A Collective Voice. She is a visual artist and understands the powerful tool that art can be. Leyva was raised in Mexico and now lives in New Mexico. She has been creating seed murals for the past four years.
