Vagina Van for V-Day

Axle Contemporary and Shirley Klinghoffer

We have printed enormous banners which we will affix to the exterior of the mobile gallery with the word "vagina" composed of 250,000 individual pink dots.  Each dot represents a woman, currently living in New Mexico, that will directly experience some form of violence in her lifetime.  The visceral feeling of this huge number is immediately felt when seeing these banners. Inside the stepvan, we'll present a sculptural installation by feminist activist and artist Shirley Klinghoffer.

On Thursday morning, February 14th, at 9:00 am, Axle Contemporary will join the worldwide One Billion Rising campaign at the New Mexico Capital Roundhouse. Throughout the rest of the day, we'll drive the truck through the streets of Santa Fe, from the Plaza to Airport Road, from Old Pecos Trail to Agua Fria, encouraging all to speak the work "vagina" and to increase awareness around issues of violence against women.
