Axle Contemporary presents Ati Maier’s new SpaceRider film, No Longer on the Map in conjunction with the CURRENTS New Media Festival in Santa Fe.
The 10-minute film will be projected at locations around Santa Fe between June 13th and June 21st.
On the opening night of the CURRENTS festival, the projection will be large, on the side of the Warehouse 21 building in the Santa Fe Railyard. Other projections will be smaller, variously on the side of buildings, on the side of the Axle Contemporary mobile artspace, or inside the Saloon at Motenson's Eaves Movie Ranch. All projections will also be accompanied by an exhibition of Maier’s drawings inside Axle Contemporary. The drawings will also be on view during the day in the Axle Contemporary mobile artspace.
Filmed in Majorca, Spain, No Longer on the Map includes, in addition to the mysterious SpaceRider, scenes of medieval towns, a rider in black on a donkey, windmills spinning out of control, and mountains transforming into waves.
For over a decade now, artist Ati Maier has been exploring her SpaceRider character. The SpaceRider is a mythological equestrian of the future, or maybe some alternative past that hasn’t previously entered our consciousness. Maier herself is an accomplished equestrian and always portrays the SpaceRider herself in her films and photographs. She also paints and draws the character. Is the SpaceRider a human from the past or the future or a visitor from another planet? We may not know, but we do know that the SpaceRider is an outside observer who sees and witnesses our world without ever speaking or revealing her face. When confronted with the SpaceRider’s presence we are inspired to look at ourselves, at our culture and society, to maybe see our small world as another might see it. The SpaceRider is a witness who makes us into witnesses too.
from the artist:
"This is a film made by a painter, I paint with images and sounds. The SpaceRider, arrives out of the ocean onto an ancient island to meet with a hooded figure on a donkey and together they catalyze dramatic biblical events. The film works with mystical abstraction and is inspired by the antihero Don Quixote and his perception of reality versus Illusion.”
